Offshore St. Augustine, in about 75 feet of water, lies a relatively small barge reef known as the little barge reef. With dimensions of 20 feet by 60 feet it is also known as the 20 X 60 barge. Although a smaller site it is packed full of marine life. Below are pictures of the reef structure and some of the marine life encountered. Animals witnessed that may not be included in the pictures include goliath grouper, sheepshead, amberjack, red snapper, and much more. The metal structure of the vessel is completely covered with invertebrate growth providing food and shelter for a variety of marine species. The reef site is ideal for a macro photographer with its plenty and variety of colorful juvenile species.
Gosh these pictures make me want to create a salt water aquarium with critters collected at a reef like this.
Joe, great photo’s… Sometimes we fail to appriciate the macro environment when sport diving… Thanks for the reminder to pay closer attention next time…
