While conducting a reef photo and video dive TISIRI's Joe Kistel encounters a massive fish: A near 6 foot long , several hundred pound, Goliath Grouper shown in the video below. Watch this Giant grouper stare Kistel's camera down and listen for his deep, lung rumbling, "thumps."
Goliath Grouper are occasionally found offshore Jacksonville at various reefs sites but it is always a surprise to a diver when he or she comes face to face with such a large fish. These grouper can grow up to 800 lbs. They are currently a protected species and thus not open to fishing. This particular Goliath was observed 11 miles east of Mayport, in 70 feet of water, on an artificial reef consisting of culverts and a barge.
