St. Augustine Reef Project

TISIRI’s Ed Kalakauskis, Larry Davis, and Joe Kistel met with Carl Blow of the St. Johns County Port Authority in regards to the upcoming reef deployment. The meeting was on the Bridge of Lions looking over the piling removal and barge loading process. The temporary bridge has been removed and the pilings are being loaded onto a barge for a reef deployment in the next few weeks. The material will be hauled several miles offshore south east of the St. Augustine inlet and placed in about 65ft of water.

The pilings are roughly 55 ft long by 12” through 15” square. The contractor is cutting the pilings in half to maximize loading areas on the barge. This experience is just another reminder of the effort that goes into artificial reef creation.
