Next week, weather and logistics permitting, a new reef of over 700 tons (1,400,000 pounds) of concrete material will be placed offshore North East Florida. Below are a few pictures of the material that will be used to create the new reef.
The concrete reef material consist of surplus and/or damaged structures from previous development projects. This includes large diameter culvert pipes, box junctions, and miscellaneous pieces. The variety of concrete structures will provide a labyrinth of underwater structure and substrate surface area; perfect for reef life to colonize.
The picture below shows the location where the concrete reef material will be deployed. The area is roughly 12 miles from the coast, 21 miles from Jacksonville inlet, and 19.5 miles from the St. Augustine inlet. The reef site is about 73 feet deep.
The image below shows a close up image of the permitted reef area and includes other structures as well as there GPS coordinates. The yellow pin indicates where the reef material is to be placed.
This material should make a great new reef and in a little time become home to many fish and sea critters. If interested in participating in the deployment contact us via our contact page
